Onions on the Racks

One sure sign we are midway through summer is the onion harvest. Ken plants onions seed in late January or early February. Because onions are fairly hardy, they are one of the first crops transplanted into the soil. They grow based on length of day. At some point the tops fall over and start to dry. The onions will not get bigger. It is time to pull them and set them out of the weather in a place with good airflow.

Years ago Ken bought these racks and built shelves for them. After he comes into the yard with a trailer load of onions, shallots, and garlic, I help him set everything on the racks and get them up onto the shelves.

Why are there crates and grates along the bottom? Curious free range geese will pull onions off the racks! So we barricade the onions to keep them safe from the long necks of the geese.
